PFAS and PFOS Testing for Consumer Products: Why Brands, Importers and Manufacturers Need Reliable Testing

PFAS and PFOS testing for consumer products is becoming increasingly important for manufacturers, importers, exporters, retailers, brands, buying houses and quality teams. PFAS chemicals have been used in many everyday products because they provide water resistance, oil resistance, grease resistance, stain resistance, heat resistance and non-stick performance

These properties are useful in products such as textiles, food packaging, cookware, cosmetics, carpets and coatings. However, the same chemistry that makes PFAS useful also makes it a major environmental and compliance concern. PFAS chemicals are highly persistent, do not break down easily, and are often referred to as “forever chemicals.”

For consumer product companies, PFAS testing is no longer only a laboratory requirement. It is becoming a supply chain, export, buyer compliance, product safety and brand reputation requirement. Regulators and customers are increasingly asking companies to understand whether their products contain PFOS, PFOA or other PFAS compounds. The U.S. EPA notes that PFAS have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s, while the U.S. FDA identifies PFAS uses in food-contact applications such as non-stick coatings, grease-proof paper packaging, food processing gaskets and manufacturing aids.

Why PFAS testing for consumer products is important

Consumer product PFAS testing helps answer a direct question: Does this product contain restricted or reportable PFAS compounds?

For manufacturers and exporters, this helps reduce the risk of shipment rejection, buyer disputes, regulatory non-compliance and reputational damage. For retailers and brands, it supports restricted substance compliance, supplier verification and sustainability commitments. For importers and private-label businesses, it provides evidence that products have been independently assessed.

PFAS regulations are tightening across several markets, especially for textiles, cosmetics, food packaging, cookware and other consumer goods. In 2026, PFAS in consumer products remains a live regulatory issue, with several governments and public bodies focusing on restrictions for non-essential uses in everyday products.

Consumer products commonly tested for PFAS and PFOS

Atlas Lab supports PFAS, PFOS and PFOA testing across a wide range of consumer products and product-related materials. The correct testing scope depends on the product category, buyer requirement, target market and suspected PFAS source.

  • Textiles, clothing and apparel
  • Footwear and leather products
  • Food packaging and paper products
  • Non-stick cookware and kitchenware
  • Cosmetics and personal care products
  • Carpets, rugs and upholstery
  • Paints, coatings and sealants
  • Cleaning products and surface protectors
  • Baby products and children’s products
  • Electronics and accessories
  • Sports, outdoor and travel products
  • Packaging materials and product contact materials
How PFAS testing for consumer products is done

PFAS testing can be done through targeted compound analysis, broader PFAS panels or screening methods depending on the requirement. LC-MS/MS is commonly used to identify and quantify specific PFAS compounds such as PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFBS, PFHxA and related substances.

For broader screening, total fluorine, extractable organic fluorine or total organic fluorine may be used to indicate whether fluorinated substances are present. These screening methods can be useful for product investigations, but they do not identify individual PFAS compounds by themselves. For compliance decisions, targeted PFAS analysis is often required.

The right testing strategy depends on the product. A textile exporter may need a restricted substance list test. A food packaging manufacturer may need a food-contact PFAS assessment. A cookware brand may need coating verification. A cosmetics company may need formulation screening. A retailer may need supplier batch verification across multiple product categories.

Why choose Atlas Lab for PFAS and PFOS consumer product testing?

Atlas Lab helps manufacturers, exporters, importers, retailers and brands with PFAS testing for consumer products, PFOS testing, PFOA testing, PFAS-free claim verification, product compliance testing and restricted substance testing.

Our team supports testing for textiles, clothing, footwear, leather products, food packaging, cookware, cosmetics, personal care products, carpets, upholstery, paints, coatings, sealants, cleaning products, waterproofing sprays, children’s products, outdoor gear, packaging materials and product-related waste or wastewater.

In many cases, the best approach is not only to test the final product, but also to check raw materials, coatings, finishing chemicals, packaging, process water, wastewater or sludge where PFAS contamination may enter the supply chain. This gives a clearer picture of where the risk is coming from and how it can be controlled.

At Atlas Lab, our focus is to provide accurate testing, clear reporting and practical technical support so clients can make informed decisions before products reach the market.
