Good lubricant health is imperative to Good machinery health

We as human beings, conduct multiple tests to assess whether we are living in the best state of physical health. Just as a medical test determines the results of one’s health, regular testing of your machinery and equipment is just as important for its overall functioning. We may perceive our equipment to be completely healthy, but sometimes we are unaware of what damage is stirring within.

AN INTERESTING CASE STUDY THAT WILL DRAW MORE ATTENTION TO THE INTERNAL WELL-BEING OF YOUR MACHINERY

The Central Appalachian coal region faced a rather surprising incident. A pair of rope shovels was used as the equipment for mine digging. One of the four planetary gearcases on the propel drives of the shovel would on an average fail every 6 to 8 months. Each gear cost around $400,000 and it was predictable that all 4 gearboxes would have to be changed in the next 2 years.

It was shocking because the lube changes were done every 6 months at regular intervals. After repeated attempts to decode the problem, it was finally realized that oil analysis could be an effective solution.

It was deduced that a new oil sample analysis was imperative to compare used oil with. The resample confirmed that the new oil’s additive package had been lost.

The oil analysis results suggested that a frequent oil change must take place rather than changing the entire gearbox. So rather than spending $400,000 by changing each gear, it would be more sensible to do a regular oil change which would barely cost $3000. Such is the significance of timely oil analysis.

SYSTEMATIC OIL ANALYSIS WILL MINIMIZE FUTURE MACHINERY DAMAGE

Oil analysis is especially important for machinery that are relevant to the production process and can save them from further breakdowns and also save repairing costs in turn generating more profits.

  • Since most of construction equipment is likely to be exposed to extreme weather conditions, dust and debris, wear and tear etc. oil analysis is imperative.
  • Machinery breakdown due to defective oil quality is rampant. When unexpected breakdowns are reduced, unexpected repairs are reduced. This can be controlled with consistent oil analysis.
  • Oil analysis is a key determining factor for setting regular intervals for draining the old oil from the engine and replacing it with new.
  • If you are purchasing any new equipment, oil analysis must be considered an essential procedure to avoid any forthcoming damages to your new machinery.
