The importance of drinking water for humankind, society, industry and the ecosystem

How water protects and benefits our Body, Organs, Cells & Overall Well-being

Water is a natural gift given to us by nature and drinking water regularly is vital to our survival. 70% of our body is made up of this fluid and drinking water is important to our health because it can speed up our metabolism, makes our skin healthier, helps us lose weight, keeps our tissues healthy and allows us to stay alert.

The following are the benefits of clean drinking water:

Water lubricates the joints, forms an integral part of saliva and mucus and most importantly carries oxygen to different parts of the body through our blood.

  • It also provides a cushion for the brain, spinal cord and other sensitive tissues.
  • It flushes out waste, regulates body temperature, helps in digestion and also helps in the proper functioning of the kidneys.
  • It helps maintain blood pressure and dissolves vital minerals and nutrients in the body.

Although we need to drink a good amount of water to stay healthy, this drinking water needs to be potable i.e. suitable for human consumption. It is important for it to be drinkable and safe.
The World Health Organisation defines safe drinking water as "water that does not present any risk to health when consumed over a period of time, including different sensitivities that may occur between life stages."

The implications of clean drinking water and its importance on the economy and communities

A safe and clean water supply is the backbone of a healthy economy.
Our economy depends on clean water: manufacturing, farming, tourism, recreation, energy production, and other economic sectors need clean water to function and flourish.
Clean water and sanitation can also result in low health costs, more productivity, lesser food shortages, and fewer premature deaths, thus boosting the development of the economy.
Not only do individuals need clean water, but entire communities benefit from clean water, and they need more than just water. Communities need clean water that is safe to use for household cooking, washing, and sanitation. All the communities have a need for clean water for sustainable development.

Lack of clean water contributes to the deaths of 3.575 million people who succumb to diseases related to unsafe water every year. Some of these people are the primary income earners for their families, and losing them plummets their families into more severe poverty, which can impact several generations.
When communities don’t have access to clean water for energy and food production, they resort to irrigating crops with untreated wastewater, which leads to water-borne diseases. It is estimated only less than 10% of collected wastewater globally is treated.

The agent that keeps the life-cycle alive- Clean drinking water

The earth is composed of about 71% water. While a community is made up of living organisms who reside in the same geographical area and live interacting with one another, an ecosystem is broader, including the interaction between people and other living creatures. This also includes the interaction between those living components and their non-living environments like water, weather, climate, etc.

Each part of the ecosystem is integral and necessary to promote the ecosystem’s health, productivity, and sustainability. Clean drinking water is the most important part of the ecosystem that benefits from building a healthy and thriving life cycle.

In conclusion, we can say that clean drinking water is the backbone of the living and non-living world. It is the most significant part of the planet that helps maintain and sometimes restore balance into nature.

The United Nations (UN) discusses five significant reasons why safe and clean drinking water is a necessity for communities to thrive physically, mentally, economically, socially, and spiritually. Those reasons include:

  • Sustainable development
  • Socio-Economic development
  • Energy and food production
  • Health and survival
  • Healthy ecosystems
