Atlas Lab offers comprehensive bunker fuel quality testing and analysis services in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, as well as services throughout India. Testing and analysis are essential to ensure that bunker fuels such as VLSFO, IFO, and MGO are safe to use, compliant with ISO 8217 and IMO 2020 standards, and reliable for ship operations.
Bunker fuel is critical for powering vessels, but is often affected by quality issues and contamination. Common problems include water contamination, sediments, catalytic fines (cat fines), sodium, vanadium, high sulfur, and even chemical residues such as DCPD, styrene, and indene. These contaminants can cause serious engine problems, including blocked filters, injector wear, piston damage, turbocharger fouling, and hot corrosion of exhaust valves. Over time, such issues reduce fuel efficiency, increase maintenance costs, and may even cause unexpected breakdowns at sea.
The primary advantage of bunker fuel testing is to verify its authenticity and quality, as contaminated or off-spec fuels can lead to operational failures and disputes. Testing helps ensure that the fuel is stable, within ISO specifications, and safe for long-term use. Some of the key tests for bunker fuel include water content (Karl Fischer / ISO 3733), total sediment existent and potential (TSE/TSP), sulfur content, cat fines analysis, density, viscosity, flash point, and GC-MS screening for chemical contaminants. All testing and analysis at Atlas Lab are conducted according to national and international standards, including ISO, ASTM, IP, and BIS.
Atlas Lab offers clients a comprehensive bunker fuel testing solution, providing quick and accurate results at a cost-effective price. Our tests are conducted by seasoned experts in the field, providing precise solutions to address fuel quality concerns and helping ship owners, managers, and operators protect their vessels and prevent costly downtime.
